An American application before an American objection.

NASA GISS explicitly names Equal Earth as the projection used in its GISTEMP-v4 temperature animations. Its G.Projector software added Equal Earth on 24 August 2018, in version 2.3.1. This is a documented scientific use, not a NASA position on the UN resolution.

The distinction matters: a country casts one diplomatic vote, but its scientists, publishers and schools do not thereby become a single decision-maker.

The vote, precisely.

On 4 September 2026, the General Assembly adopted “Correct the Map” at its 114th plenary meeting: 164 in favour, the United States against, and six abstentions—Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine. Draft A/80/L.104 became A/RES/80/307 in the UN register.

This was a vote on a political text, not a test of a mathematical formula. Under Article 18, each Assembly member has one vote. The US no vote did not have veto power.

The stated objection.

In its explanation from 22:58, the US delegation attacked the initiative’s ideological framing, references to reparations and cognitive justice, and its place among UN priorities. It did not present a mathematical rebuttal of Equal Earth.

Analysis. Rejecting the political package is compatible with accepting a tool’s usefulness. A November 2025 US statement on national human rights institutions also called for shorter, actionable resolutions and criticised administrative burden. This is a limited comparison, not a comprehensive account of US policy.

A political connection that was not invented.

Africa No Filter and Speak Up Africa’s campaign had public support from Target Malaria in May 2025. The African Union’s February 2026 decision, Assembly/AU/Dec.959(XXXIX), explicitly connected the initiative to its reparations framework and to Africa’s ability to shape its own narrative.

Analysis. This explains why the issue extends beyond geography. Whether that connection strengthens or weakens the case for a UN resolution remains a political judgment.

The draft’s preamble explains cognitive justice and memorial reparation through geographical knowledge, historical truth, education and awareness. It establishes no compensation amount or payment mechanism. A government can still object to the symbolic recognition; that does not create a financial obligation absent from the text.

Reservations did not dictate a single vote.

The UK voted yes while rejecting the view that historical projections alone constitute an injustice requiring UN redress. Ukraine abstained over territorial depictions. The EU explicitly disclaimed endorsement of equal-earth.com or changes to territorial status.

Analysis. A projection and the borders drawn on it are different editorial layers. Supporting the educational purpose need not mean endorsing every associated political claim.

A vote cannot change the geometry.

Equal Earth, introduced in 2018 by Bojan Šavrič, Tom Patterson and Bernhard Jenny, preserves relative area. It does not preserve all angles, shapes or distances. Gall–Peters is a different equal-area projection.

Spherical Mercator preserves local angles. Its local area factor relative to the equator is 1/cos²φ: four at 60° north or south. This is not a factor for an entire country. Move the same finite patch below and observe the different trade-offs. No flat world map preserves every property of the globe.

How this comparison is calculated

Calculated on a sphere. Each map is fitted separately: compare areas within a map, not across frames. Mercator stops at ±85.05°; Equal Earth shows the whole globe. The patches have a finite 5° angular radius; the displayed local factor applies to a very small area at their centre.

Where the evidence ends.

The claim that Washington wanted America to look bigger is not established by the sources examined. Neither is the claim that changing a projection alone would change investment or geopolitical power. Lapon, Ooms and De Maeyer’s research on cognitive maps investigates mental area judgments, not the motives of UN delegations or the economic effects of this resolution.

The Assembly’s educational remit is expressly recognised by Article 13 of the Charter. That answers a question of competence, not whether this particular initiative deserves priority. State and local education responsibilities in the US also mean a diplomatic vote is not a national curriculum decision.

Why only one is supported

There is no US veto in the General Assembly. The stated political objection is documented. A desire to make America look bigger is not established by the examined sources. It is an unsupported attribution of motive, not a verified reason for the vote.
