A sphere has no top edge.

Earth’s axis and equator define north and south, but do not determine which direction belongs at the top of a page. Switch our map to south-up and look for Australia and Europe. If finding them takes longer, that describes familiarity with an image, not a change in geography.

Change orientation first, then the centre. Find Australia and Europe. What stays geographically the same?

North up · Greenwich · 0°

Equal Earth · spherical model · Natural Earth 1:110m. Area ratios stay intact. Changing the centre changes the map’s edges and local shapes.

Orientation and centre are different choices.

Turning a map 180° changes its orientation. Moving the central meridian changes the split and what appears in the middle. A Pacific-centred view can bring Asia and Oceania together. Our tool keeps Equal Earth: area ratios remain intact even when shapes and positions on the page change.

What psychology contributes.

Gagnon and colleagues (2011) found faster responses for pairings such as north and high status in implicit-association tasks. A follow-up arrangement kept attention at screen centre. These are task-specific associations, not proof that north-up maps cause political inequality or that rotation removes prejudice.

Try changing one thing at a time.

Spend a minute with south-up. Describe three geographical neighbour relationships that remain unchanged. Then change only the centre. Keeping other settings fixed helps separate the effect of rotation from the effect of moving the map’s split.

A new perspective still needs clear labels.

Our unlabelled teaching map can be rotated with an orientation indicator. A wall map needs place names laid out for its intended orientation. Tom Patterson’s prepared south-up originals demonstrate this. Always check orientation, projection, data and purpose when reading an unfamiliar map.
